What matters in a cat litter for kittens?

Kittens spend a lot of time in the litter box: they dig, sniff and play. Four qualities make a litter comfortable for them.

1 Low dust. When kittens dig, their noses are right down in the litter. A low-dust litter keeps the air in and around the box clean.
2 No scent. Kittens go by their own smell. A strongly scented litter can confuse them.
3 Nice under the paws. Light pellets made from plant fibers are softer than clay granules. Many cats like how they feel when digging.
4 Easy to keep clean. Kittens use the box more often. With a firmly clumping litter, scooping takes seconds, even several times a day.

What if your kitten puts litter in its mouth?

Kittens explore everything new with their mouths, litter included. TOFU is made from pea and soy fibers, corn starch, corn flour and guar gum, with no clay and no silica. The unscented version has no added fragrance.

Still, the same goes for any litter: it isn't food. If your kitten keeps eating litter rather than just nibbling at it, talk to your vet.

The right litter box for your kitten

An open box with a low entry is easiest for kittens. Put it where your kitten spends time anyway, somewhere quiet and away from the food bowl. You can add a hood later, once your cat is reliably litter trained.

With TOFU, a depth of 3 to 5 cm (1–2 in) is enough, for kittens too. We explain step by step how to litter train your kitten in our magazine: How to litter train a kitten.

How to get your kitten used to TOFU

Most kittens already know a litter when they move in with you. A gentle transition makes it easy for them.

1 Start with the familiar litter. Ask the breeder or shelter which litter your kitten is used to and use it for the first few days.
2 Then mix. Gradually add more TOFU until, after about 10 days, there's only TOFU in the box.
3 Place them in the box after meals and naps. That's usually all it takes. You don't need to demonstrate digging.
4 Stay calm. If there's an accident, clean it up without fuss. Scolding only makes your kitten anxious.

How often should you change cat litter for kittens?

1 Several times a day: scoop out clumps and poop so the box stays inviting for your kitten.
2 As needed: top up when the level drops well below 3 cm (1 in).
3 About every 2 to 4 weeks: replace all the litter and clean the box.

We explain the routine for one or more cats in our magazine: How often should you change cat litter? Switching from another litter is covered in detail in Switching to TOFU.

When do kittens start using the litter box?

From about 3 to 4 weeks old, kittens go on their own and look for a spot with litter by themselves. They mostly learn this from their mother and by instinct. If they move in with you at around 12 weeks, they usually already know the litter box.

If your kitten still won't use the box, the cause is often the location, an entry that's too high or an unfamiliar litter. You'll find tips in our article How to litter train a kitten.
